Walk

Walk; Don't run from danger

An overused but relevant trope: the first thing taught to you when defusing a bomb is to walk away. Running increases your chance of tripping and being caught.

Success is often the result of taking calculated risks and making bold moves in business, however, when your plans or the market goes awry. I’m looking at you, Silicon Valley Bank. We are faced with several choices. Often our hypothalamus engages in our fight or flight response. As adults and businesspeople, we can control ourselves and the situation. Too often, we feel better about doing “something,” but don’t confuse activity with involvement.

Walking away from any bad situation helps us to maintain that sense of control. A measured and thorough analysis of the situation leads us to more options. This can cause us to make fewer impulsive decisions, leading to poor outcomes. Walking allows us to maintain a sense of composure and think through our actions more carefully.

Grace under pressure and a calm demeanor send signals to those around us. The situation may be dire, but you are in control and taking measured actions. People will gravitate to you.

What are some danger signals to indicate it is time to take a walk?

  • The potential risks outweigh the potential rewards.
  • You need more information to make an INFORMED decision.
  • Your gut is telling you something isn't right. Don’t overlook your experience and expertise when events aren’t lining up, even without hard data.
  • You are being pressured into making a decision.
  • The decision goes against your values or principles.

What do you think? When have you decided to walk away?
